Founded in Brooklyn by Janina Young in 2023, AFFEKT Dance Company creates contemporary movement worlds rooted in momentum, musicality, and human connection. Our work blends floorwork, spirals, and clear pathways with an emotional logic that invites audiences into both introspection and imagination.
We believe movement is a catalyst for curiosity, joy, and self-recognition. Through rigorous physicality and moments of stillness, the body becomes a storyteller; revealing tension, release, humor, vulnerability, and the beauty of being human.
Tonight’s artists move with purpose and play, holding space for multiple truths and individual voices. Thank you for being here and supporting independent dance in New York City.

‘Circling the Drain’ draws the picture of unchecked greed and how it destroys people.
My intention is to create an atmosphere of both seduction and unease; euphoria and purgatory. Where the audience feels drawn in and simultaneously unsettled. The work unfolds as a series of escalating physical negotiations, each more volatile than the last. It’s not about trying to make a political statement or deliver a clear message. It’s a space to sit with tension between wanting and having, between control and collapse.
